USA Hockey Try Hockey for Free

On Saturday, March 1, local youth hockey  associations across the country invited boys and girls ages four to nine years old to their local rinks for a Try Hockey for Free clinic to experience ice hockey for the first time and learn the basics of the sport in a fun, safe environment.

The event was USA Hockey’s most successful event to date.  Over 15,800 children at close to 500 locations across the country were introduced to the sport.  In the Midwest Affiliate we had 517 children in 13 locations that experienced hockey for the first time!  The participating associations and the number of participants at events in Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas are as follows:

Host                                                     Participants

Des Moines Youth Hockey                        97

Kansas City Stars                                       81

Omaha Hockey Club                                  70

Kansas City Fighting Saints                       70

Siouxland Youth Hockey                           60

Wichita Youth Hockey                               44

Saint Joseph Youth Hockey                        40

Quad City Hockey                                      38

Tri City Youth Hockey                               35

Freemont Flyers Hockey                             31

Dubuque Youth Hockey                             23

Lincoln Ice Hockey                                    21

Iowa City-Coralville Hockey                      17

Combined with 521 children that participated in the November 2013 Try Hockey for Free event at various locations across our affiliate, over 1,000 children tried the sport of ice hockey for the very first time during the 2013-2014 hockey season!  Those are remarkable numbers and speak volumes to the outstanding efforts of all of our volunteers in each of our communities.  You should all be very proud.
